PKP PLN - Items not being deposited

I am currently trying to troubleshoot PKP PLN functionality with our Scholarly Exchange hosted journal http://www.ijtarp.org (Journal Identifier: D007D266-0707-420B-85F2-3433EE0191B2).

I have agreed to the tick box terms, enable the service in the OJS PKP PLN plugin settings and obtained a journal Identification number. More over, inspecting the PKP PLN Status page, I can see that: The PKP PLN can accept deposits from this journal.

However, after waiting a couple of weeks for 15 pending entries to sync with the PLN, they are all still reporting: Processing Status: Unknown; LOCKSS Status:Unknown; Complete: No

I would appreciate any assistance or advise you can offer to help me get PLN functionality operating correctly.

@mjoyce, the version on this is 2.4.8 stable as of mid Aug 2016; commits for plugins/generic/pln are confirmed up-to-date against current ojs-stable-2_4_8.

Ok, so this seems to indicate that everything is running ok.

However the 15 que’d items have been in the Unknown / New state for a good couple of weeks now and not yet progressed to the LOCKSS archive list or keepersregistry.

How long should the process usually take to run fully, so that all items are properly archived?

Everything is not running OK. There should be two more lines in the the log that look like this:

[2016-06-09 11:57:59] [Notice] Sending deposits to the PLN.
[2016-06-09 11:57:59] [Notice] Task process stopped.

It looks like your journal hasn’t completed the packaging step. It’s possible you’re missing the Archive_Tar PHP extension, which is usually bundled with PEAR. Do your web server logs reveal anything else?

I found a reference in the error log to the missing mbstring dependency. @Paul_Stevens, please check the status again tomorrow, after 2pm, Eastern US time.

Hi @mjoyce, unfortunately I don’t have access to any of the backend web server logs, as our OJS installation is hosted by Scholarly Exchange (who referred me here) - I only have access to the main OJS platform functionality. I believe Clinton @ctgraham represents Scholarly Exchange and is kindly also responding here.

Looking at the next reply it does look like he’s found some missing dependancy. As requested, I will check with the PKP PLN Status this evening to see if there is a change.

@ctgraham, Following a check of the PKP PLN status, it looks like something something has initiated. I notice that ‘Local Status’ has now changed to ‘Transferred’ and ‘Checked’ status is now populated.

I will keep an eye on things over the next few days and hopefully be able to report back when they has propagated successfully

Just a quick reply to update this thread and for future benefit of others who may experience this same issue


I checked out the status yesterday (and today), and can see that it now shows ‘Sent to LOCKSS’ under ‘Processing Status’:

I don’t know how long it will take for LOCKSS Status to update from ‘Unknown’ and eventual process completion. I will monitor and update here

Have been monitoring the progress of this, but wondering if it is stuck at the Sent to LOCKSS status as it doesnt seem to be progressing. Do you know how long this part should usually take?

One of the LOCKSS boxes in the PLN was down for a week. It’s been back online for less than a week, and probably needs some time to catch up.

I checked a couple of your deposits - they’ve reached agreement and will eventually show as completed.

I have also checked status and it looks like the bulk of the entries have indeed indeed reached agreement status and are also marked as complete.

However, I notice that there is one item ( ID 47) that is still marked as Local Status and Processing Status ‘Unknown’ - although it does state that LOCKSS Status ‘Agreement’, Complete ‘Yes’.

But, I can’t see the expected entries in either of these locations yet. I suspect this could be something that takes a little while to propagate, do you have any experience with how long I should normally expect these to take to appear?

Regarding ID 47 - i will wait until i can verify whether it has appeared in the LOCKSS repository. If it doesn’t, I’m assuming that if i press the ‘Reset’ button, another attempt will be made to upload to LOCCKS

The PKP contributions to the Keepers Registry are updated once a month, so it’ll be a while before your journal shows up there.

The PKP PLN doesn’t contribute its content to the GLN. I’m not sure what you need to do to get your content there.

I don’t know why deposit 47 is unknown/unknown. But it’s in our LOCKSS network, so there’s no need to reset it.

Regarding the LOCKSS GLN. I note that there are some details (related to our Journal and Scholarly Exchange) within the CSV file on the LOCKSS GLN page I referred to earlier in this thread. I note that the journal name has not updated from the one we changed it from earlier this year (it now includes ‘& Practice’). We have not done anything to create this entry and I thought it was something to do with PKP PLN, but it does indicate something to do with Scholarly Exchange - perhaps @ctgraham knows something about this, and can offer some knowledge or advice?

Enabling the Publisher Manifest in Journal Setup, Step 2.6 provides a public manifest which allows for LOCKSS networks to archive your journal content, but each LOCKSS network requires additional setup on the network’s side to complete the process.

Scholarly Exchange as a hosting service doesn’t perform the negotiation or setup with the LOCKSS network(s), and I don’t think it is appropriate for Scholarly Exchange to be listed as the “publisher” in the Keepers Registry. Did you have any direct contact with the Global LOCKSS Network when you initially activated the Publisher Manifest? I do think you’ll want to follow up directly with the GLN to confirm your participation and to update your journal name.

I will check in with the GLN regarding correcting the publisher names to represent the actual publishers rather than Scholarly Exchange as a hosting provider.

Tengo una revista en la que en el plugin pln parece estar todo bien. El manifiesto lockss activado y el status marca entregado y yes desde hace varias semanas.
Sin embargo no figura en http://static.pkp.sfu.ca/pkppn/onix.csv
Puedes ver mis logs y las preguntas realizadas en ÂżCĂłmo saber si los artĂ­culos de nuestra revista se estĂĄn guardando en Lockss

The onix.csv file is created and updated by the PKP Preservation Network, so @astevens is better suited to assist in the other thread than I am. From that thread, it looks like your are on the right track.

Hi. I’ve just upgrade my OJS from 2.4.7 to 2.4.8.3 (2018/11/10) )and been enabling the PKP PLN plugin since yesterday (2018/11/12). But,Why today (2018/11/13) The network status still “This journal must be running OJS 2.4.8 to make deposits to the PKP PLN.” and there’s no deposit progress?
and how long does the PKP PLN Plugin take time to process it?

Hello @Danu_Herlambang.

What is your journal URL? The plugin should have picked up the upgrade immediately.

Once the plugin starts making deposits to the PKP PN, they can take up to a week to be processed.
