Change Registration Fields by Journal

Hi, we recently edited a field in the user registration form so that it no longer appears required by editing lib/pkp/templates/frontend/components/registrationForm.tpl. This is working great, but it obviously affects all registration forms across all journals.

Is there a way to edit template files that only affects a single journal? I have a feeling there’s a better way to do this (theming?) so that changes are not overwritten during updates but would definitely appreciate being pointed in the right direction.
