Sorting Contributors per Chapter

So since the dawn of time, scholars have been very particular when it comes to the order in which they are listed in works they have contributed to. But in OMP (3.4.X) I can see no way to order the Author Biographies alphabetically but still choose the order in which they appear under each article. It is either right under Biographies and wrong under each chapter or vice versa. Also there is still, several years after first reading bout the problem, the issue of the author list at the top of each monograph page. The order there is totally arbitrary if I order the contributor so that they appear correctly below each chapter. To complicate things the volume editors are also authors so they do not appear at the start of said list. Also the edited volume is now called “[Author 7] et. al.” in my archive list because I needed [Author 7] to be at the top of the contributor list so that she would be the first author mentioned below one of the articles, in front of [Editor 1] who is the “second” author of the same chapter. But none of this is unprecedented in academia. So why is it still so hard to get right?

Hi @geirrosset,

Are you able to share a link to your OMP site where this is occurring? I don’t have access to an OMP instance that utilizes chapters in this manner. It would be good to be able to observe the issue you are describing in more detail.

I’ll use the last chapter in the edited volume as an example, because that one is where the issue is clearest.

Title: Shaping Racialised Media Representations in Norwegian Sports
Subtitle:An Anti-racial Self-understanding Embedded in Nordic Exceptionalism and Hegemonic Colour-blindness
Contributors [and the order of the contributors here is very important]: Elsa Kristiansen, Tine Fristrup (lead volume editor), Lasse Sonne (second volume editor), Trygve B. Broch, Prisca Bruno Massao

To get this right, Kristiansen needs to be moved to the top of the list of contributors, or at least in front of “B” under “Contributors” in the Dashboard in order to appear in front of the others. The same goes for Fristrup and Sonne who need to be moved from “F” and “S” in front of “B” to appear as author number 2 and 3. If there had been an article in the same book with the same 5 authors but in a different order that would not have been possible because the order is determined by the “Contributors” list. In addition to this there is now no indication on our front page that Fristrup and Sonne are the editors of this volume, and the volume is presented thusly:

Internationalisation at Home: Critical Frameworks for Inclusive Global Learning

Elsa Kristiansen, Hesti Miranda, David Sulistiawan Aditya, Birhanu Haile Agezew, Su Hnin Aye, Gábor Erdei; Tine Fristrup; Meyly Kheng, Manuel Romero-Hernández, Nor Amalina Rusli; Lasse Sonne; Umar Burki, Trygve B. Broch, Prisca Bruno Massao, Zsuzsanna Varga

No indication of editors, seemingly random order and some authors are separated by commas, and others by semicolon. Not very intuitive.

It really should be possible to sort the contributors per chapter. Either on the “Chapters” overview under “Publication”, or under “Edit chapter”. Then the contributor list could be alphabetical, the editors could be listed first and each author could be sorted according to their share of the work for each chapter.

Hi @geirrosset, it looks like there are a few issues here to address, so I’ll try to break them out and hopefully we can address each.

For the ordering of author’s in chapters compared to the ordering in the book/monograph, this was a bug that is resolved and released in OMP 3.4.0-8 and should be fixed with your next upgrade (I see you are on 3.4.0-3).

The semicolons when displaying contributors are used to separate the contributors based on their roles, such as the list of editors, then a semicolon, then the list of authors - but I can see that it can be confusing when the role title is not displayed.

You mentioned no indication of editors/role titles, which may be related to a setting in OMP. Under Users & Roles > Roles, click the arrow beside a role with this issue, then click “Edit”. Under “Role Options”, there is a setting for “Show role title in contributor list” that may be turned off.

Hopefully that addresses some of your concerns, but let me know if I’ve missed something.
