I want to install the Forthcoming plugin from GitHub for my OJS. When I download it from GitHub, I don’t seem to get any files that OJS recognizes as an importable plugin, just some .php files and one .xml.
I know this is rudimentary… but if anyone can point me to “downloading .tar files for dummies” I’d be grateful.
I’d recommend against installing that plugin if you’re using OJS 3.4. The reason being that it doesn’t appear to be tested for 3.4 just yet. If you can, I would wait for a 3.4 compatible version of the plugin to be released.
For installing plugins that are not found in the plugin gallery (which is not really recommended - wherever possible you should install plugins from the plugin gallery), we do have some advice on how to go about this here: https://docs.pkp.sfu.ca/learning-ojs/en/settings-website#external-plugins
Meanwhile, I’d suggest watching for the Forthcoming plugin to be added to the Plugin Gallery in OJS 3.4.0. Installing a plugin from the Plugin Gallery ensures that you’ll get a version of the plugin that’s compatible with your OJS – otherwise you’re likely to break something with incompatible code!
I’ll tag @ajnyga in case he’s got concrete plans to update the plugin for 3.4.0-x.

I did this recently for my 3.3.0-14LTS site. It works. But eventually I disabled the plugin and replaced the Forthcoming link in the homepage menu with a custom page containing the Table of Contents of the forthcoming issue. Easier to maintain (in my specific case) !!
Sure. https://entomon.in/index.php/Entomon
The forthcoming page is now blank since the September issue was published a few days back. I will populate it with the next issue TOC when it is ready. I can afford to do this since my journal is not fully published on-line. The final publication is done using Quick Submit by the production editor (me). Once the print issue is finalised, I post the TOC in the forthcoming page. Actually when the Forthcoming plugin is used, I think (not sure) the links get added to the page as and when each article is scheduled for publication in the future issue (if the full publication workflow is online).
