How can I redirect old Google Scholar links to the new journal website after migrating publishers?

Our journal was hosted by a different publisher until 2024. In 2025, we launched a new website and republished all previously published articles there.

The issue is that the old website is now offline, so all Google Scholar links pointing to the old URLs show “Page Not Found.” Although the articles exist on the new website, Google Scholar still shows the outdated links.

I would like to know:

  • Is there a way to map or redirect the old article URLs to the new URLs, so that users clicking the Google Scholar link are taken directly to the article on the new website?

  • Are there any recommended methods (redirects, canonical tags, URL update requests, etc.) to fix this issue when the old website is no longer accessible?

Any guidance from those who have handled journal website migrations would be greatly appreciated.

Hi!

Did you change the domain? If yes, and you don’t own it anymore, then the maximum you can do is:

  • Contact the old provider and ask them to make a favor for you and keep alive redirections (very unlikely they will do it)
  • Get in touch with Google Scholar and ask if they can help you

If the domain didn’t change or if you still own it, then you can automate a list of permanent redirects using a backup of the old application (if you still have it).

Best,
