Enabling cache on OJS 3.1.0.1

Dear,

I am experiencing high load time to OJS. I used some webpage speed test and they indicate I should enable caching. I have looked at some posts that suggests that the cache feature should not be enabled because it has not been maintained.

Does it apply for the OJS 3.1.0.1?

If my statement is not correct or valid for OJS 3.1.0.1, which are the recommended settings to obtain a reliable system and improve access performance to the system?

Thank you,
Gustavo

Hi @gnardin,

The caching suggestion is probably a general recommendation made without much regard to the specific page it’s analyzing. To determine what’s limiting your performance you’ll have to do a little testing. Is the bottleneck your server, or your connection, or perhaps your browser? If it’s on the server, is it e.g. MySQL, or PHP?

Hi @asmecher,
Yes, this was a general recommendation from our hosting provider.
I would like to enable the cache to see if there is any significant difference on the user experience, but I am afraid of enabling it and start having misterious issues. What I could understand from other posts in the Forum, this features does not have been maintained.

I will also start performing some more specific analysis on the infrastructure components.

Thank you,

Hi @gnardin,

OJS uses various kinds of caching already; the object cache you’re referring to isn’t going to work reliably and I’m not aware of any situations where it’s removed a performance bottleneck. I’d suggest investigating the bottleneck before tinkering with that setting.

Hi @asmecher,
I am still trying to collect information about the infrastructure performance, but the service provider is resistant on providing instructions how we can measure the performance of specific components.
Is it correct that PKP also hosts journal websites in addition to provide the software solution? If so, can you send me more information about that service? Can you also send me a link of a journal hosted at PKP?

Thank you,

Hi @gnardin,

James here - I run PKP’s Publishing Services. You can find information on our journal hosting support options here: https://pkpservices.sfu.ca/content/journal-hosting. We host hundreds of separate OJS installs and know how to provide a fully-functioning hosting experience that is fine-tuned to OJS’ requirements (including speed/stability, but also user/spam management, stats processing, SSL, you name it). If you are interested in further info, you can contact our support team directly at support@publicknowledgeproject.org. We’d be happy to talk further!

Cheers,
James

Hi James,
I contacted the support and they already replied with a test account.
Thank you,
