Cannot make recommendation direct to authors, only to chief editor

I’m a section editor. I have a paper which has been reviewed, however I only have the option to send the decision to the journal editor, not the authors. Also it says “Round 1 Status: All recommendations are in and a decision is needed” even after I have made the decision. I cannot upload reviewed files or copy reviews into any correspondence with the authors.
However for another paper in the same journal, all the radio buttons are present and I can use the system as designed. This also happens for another journal I edit for - sometimes I can communicate with the authors OK, sometimes only with the journal editor.

Hi @Mark_Hughes,

I suspect that your journal may have the role settings set differently for section editors, perhaps limiting their access to certain aspects of the workflow. You’d have to have the journal managers edit the settings to allow more access: Users and Roles

Thanks Roger. We thought it was a roles issue, but it is paper specific. Some are fine, some are restricted. This is the same for the two journals I edit using OJS. Are there settings linked to papers we need to change?

Hi @Mark_Hughes,

Here’s what I suspect might have happened. When an editor assigns a section editor, they have the ability to limit what the section editor can do by selecting two checkboxes. See here for an example from our demo site:

I suspect that those checkboxes may have been ticked, thus limiting your ability as section editor to carry out certain functions, thus limiting what you as a section editor can do for particular submissions.

Is there a way that the editor can retrospectively untick these boxes?

Yes - if you click the down error next to the assigned person’s name under the Participants list and select “Edit” you have the option to edit it there.
