OJS 3.3.0.11 : « Failed Ajax request or invalid JSON returned. » when trying to upload a final version

@asmecher This is from the user log from our cPanel when i clicked and error poped.

the highlighted tar.gz was extracted and in that list i copied only todays errors, should contain the trigger for the sections problem because i tried to create/edit a section few times today.

That looks like your access log, not your error log. See this post for hints on where to find your error log: How do I find my PHP error log?

I’ve searched everywhere for the error logs but i cannot find any, maybe they are not even logged anywhere, as shown above on the previous post i’ve posted a pic of my log dir, that is all there is. Those tar.gz files are the php logs?

Hi @jhrs,

Unfortunately I can’t give you specific instructions – it’ll depend on your host’s server configuration – but it should always be possible to find the PHP error log stored somewhere. Without those it would be very hard to debug a PHP-based application (like OJS). You might need to ask your server admin.

Hi @jhrs,

At a glance, those all appear to be access logs, not PHP error logs. (I’ve removed the download link – it’s probably not a good thing to share publicly, as it associates e.g. IP addresses with website visits.)

Hi @jhrs,

Try triggering the error message to appear using your browser, then immediately checking the PHP error log for a corresponding error message. I think the one cited above is unrelated to the issue you’re trying to debug.

Hi @jhrs,

That suggests that the file lib/pkp/templates/controllers/grid/settings/sections/form/sectionForm.tpl is missing from your installation. This should’ve been included in the .tar.gz package for your version of OJS.

I’ve added the files manually including the code inside the .tpl. Still getting error.

Update: Cleared the data and template cache and tried again to create or edit section and got this.

Hi @jhrs,

Are you getting the missing files from github.com? I suspect they are the wrong version. Make sure to use the same version as the rest of your OJS installation. I’d suggest starting by downloading the same .tar.gz package you used to install OJS in the first place.

Yes i was getting the files from github but u had a zip from the installation client so i did as you suggested and i still get the same ajax error.

Hi @jhrs,

You’re mixing files from different versions of OJS. Make sure to get the files you’re missing from the download package for OJS 3.3.0-11.

I double checked the version and the zip file i have, only starting from lib/pkp/controllers/gird/settings/sections, the sections folder was missing on main ojs, i moved that folder with all files inside, cleared cache and used incognito chrome to test out, still gettin the same error.

The first error is when i click create new section and the second one is when i try to edit the one sections i have from default, and thats articles. Thanks.

Hi @jhrs,

If you’re sure all the files you’ve added are from the right version of OJS, it’s possible that some of the template code is cached. Try removing all .php files from templates/t_compile.

I cleared the cache and the route is domains/domain/public_html/cache/t_domain, got the following error.

Tried two times to create new section. Thanks.

UPDATE: I tried clearing cache via administration panel and I saw that t_compile was empty after I used those 2 options: Clear Data Caches and Clear Template Cache.

This is official version, fresh download, the same version as we use.

original installation
This is the original zip we used to install the app.

I tried with both, the files from the original zip we have and from the fresh download https://pkp.sfu.ca/ojs/ojs_download/ and still facing the same error on both edit and create section.Thanks.
