More than two types of contributors

Describe the problem you would like to solve
We have a particular type of article, where someone finds a previously published text, inserts a brief forward, and then includes the text or an edited subset of the text. If the original text was in another language (Latin, German etc.) then there would be both an original Author and a Translator.

So all but the first 200-300 words are by this previous (famous) author, and the person who submits it is an “Editor” or (as with a book) writing a Preface, Forward or Introduction. It is not accurate to list this person as a co-author.

Describe the solution you’d like
Ideally, allow us to define other types of contributors. If that’s too hard, then add “Editor” to “Author” and “Translator”.

Hi @joel,

You should be able to adjust this using be creating a new role:
https://docs.pkp.sfu.ca/learning-ojs/en/users-and-roles#create-new-roles

and then, once created, under “Role Options” ensure that you select: “Show role title in contributor list”

Would that meet your needs/

Roger,

Thanks for the quick and thorough reply. Since only some roles show up in that menu, it didn’t occur to me to look there.

I will watch the video and discuss with the editorial board exactly what role we would like to list on the article page.

Joel

Hi all,

Just an additional note that we’re going to be releasing a CRediT plugin for OJS, OMP, and OPS 3.3.0 and 3.4.0. See https://credit.niso.org/ for information on the NISO CRediT vocabulary. However, there are few downstream systems that accept CRediT information just yet, so it mostly just affects the article page in OJS.

Hello, Alec
I’m wondering if you have a timeline for this plugin release through OJS. I see the plugin code under github, but I am not a programmer, and I’m thinking that maybe our journal should wait to install the plugin until it is offered through OJS specifically. Thoughts? If the plugin through OJS is still a ways away, do you have any “how-to” links that I could use to install the temporary plugin? I’ve been reading through articles all morning, and the whole thing still seems quite complicated at this point. There must be other OJS publications that are using the plugin, but I can’t seem to find much online. Thanks!!

Hi @robyn_unrau,

The CRediT roles are supported as a plugin that you can install through the Plugin Gallery within OJS, so no need to wait for further developments on that if it suits your needs.

However, the first post on this topic specifically mentioned translators, and that’s a use case that CRediT doesn’t serve; it doesn’t distinguish between translation work and authorship. So if that’s your motivating use case, Roger’s suggestion above should work.

In fact, I think between the two approaches that this request is met by current features – so unless there are objections or unmet needs, I’ll close this request!

Do we need to use the github plugin then? I don’t see a plugin already installed under the Plugin Gallery in OJS. That’s why I was wondering about the timeline. If there already is a plugin in OJS, could you send me the name? I’ve looked through those plugins about twenty times already, before I messaged you here! Or - do we need to upload it ourselves to the plugin gallery?

Sorry - thank you for replying to my first message! It is so much appreciated.

Hi @robyn_unrau,

What version of OJS are you using?

Hello, Alec,
Version 3.3.0.14

Roger,

The link is broken, but I figured it out.

Two things that are a little counter-intuitive to my software brain

  • the internal OJS role descriptions (“Journal editor”, “Copyeditor”) are the same as might be shown on the article page for the 2 or 3 or 4 roles marked as “Show role title in contributor list”. So if there are two different roles under the hood, but both are described to readers as “Editor”, that can’t be done. (Unless one is “Editor” and one is "Editor "?)
  • If I want to create a publicly-visible role that conflicts with a pre-defined role (e.g. “Copyeditor”), the work-around is to rename the pre-defined role to something else (“OJS copyeditor”).

Joel

PS: Sorry for delay. We hoped to premier the feature in our January issue but instead it will be in the July issue.
