Usage Statistics Stopped Recording

Greetings!

We would like to seek assistance regarding an issue with the usage statistics in our Open Journal Systems (OJS) installation.

We are currently running OJS 3.3.0.8. Our usage statistics had been updating normally in the previous months, and records were available when we checked them before. However, when we recently reviewed the Usage Statistics section, we noticed that the usage statistics from March 2026 onward were no longer available.

The system now displays the following message:

“No articles were found with usage statistics matching these parameters.”

We are unsure when exactly the records disappeared, as the statistics were previously being updated normally. We only noticed the issue when we recently checked the Usage Statistics section.

For your reference, we have attached a screenshot of the Usage Statistics page showing the current issue and the message displayed by OJS.

We would like to ask for your guidance on the following:

  1. What could cause previously recorded usage statistics to suddenly become unavailable or disappear in OJS 3.3.0.8?
  2. How can we determine whether the usage statistics data from March 2026 onward still exists somewhere in the system but is no longer being displayed or processed?
  3. Is it possible to recover or reprocess the previously recorded usage statistics?
  4. Are there specific OJS files, database tables, scheduled tasks, or server logs that we should check?
  5. Could this be related to the usage statistics processing mechanism, server configuration, or cron jobs?
  6. Are there any known issues in OJS 3.3.0.8 that could cause previously recorded usage statistics to become unavailable?

We would appreciate any recommended diagnostic steps that we can safely perform on our production OJS installation, as we would like to determine whether the missing statistics can still be recovered.

We can also provide additional screenshots, our OJS System Information, server configuration, or relevant logs if needed.

Thank you very much for your assistance.

Hi @patriciaaa101,

A user has also reported this here: OJS 3.3.0-20: Usage Statistics Stopped Collecting After Upgrade - #5 by jamiefowlie

Can you try some of what is suggested there to see if it resolves the issue.

It’s also worth noting that OJS 3.3.0-8 is also quite out of date and the issue may well be resolved in a later release. Old releases are risky to use and it’s important to upgrade regularly. Upgrading to the latest 3.3.0-x release is relatively quick and doesn’t involve any changes to functionality. Please note as well, that the the 3.3 branch will be maintained for the next year, so it’s also important to start considering an upgrade to 3.5, which is the newest LTS (long-term support) branch.

I once had the same problem with a newer version of OJS (3.5), and I was able to fix it simply by setting the correct permissions for the files and directories.
