We are using OJS 3.4.0.4 with Crossref as the DOI registration agency and the built-in DOI registration plugin.
DOIs are being registered successfully and metadata is deposited without any reported errors.
However, article references are not being deposited to Crossref.
What we have already verified:

The “References” metadata field is enabled:
Workflow → Submission → Metadata → References (enabled) -
References are entered in the dedicated “References” field

The Crossref Reference Linking plugin is enabled

DOI registration completes successfully with no errors or warnings
According to the plugin description, references should be automatically included in the Crossref deposit and used for DOI matching. However, when checking the deposited record in Crossref (via https://manage.crossref.org/records/ → Edit Record → enter DOI), the References field is empty.
In OJS 3.4, the Crossref XML Export Plugin is no longer available in the UI (“DOI management has moved”), so we cannot directly inspect the generated XML to verify it.
Questions:

In OJS 3.4, are references supposed to be deposited automatically via the DOI registration plugin, or is additional configuration required?

Does the plugin actually include references in the deposit, or does it only process them after deposit?

Could this be a known issue in OJS 3.4.0.x where references are not included in the deposit?
