We are experiencing persistent Google Scholar indexing issues after upgrading to OJS 3.4.0.10 for one journal . During investigation, we discovered that recently published articles are not appearing in the OAI-PMH feed for one journal, while another [still run 3.3 ojs] returns an HTTP 500 error on its OAI-PMH endpoint. Metadata tags (citation_title, citation_pdf_url, DOI, etc.) are present on article pages, and articles are assigned to published issues with publication dates. Has anyone encountered similar OAI-PMH issues after upgrading from OJS 3.3 to 3.4.0.10?
Just a note that we’ve encountered a lot of “me too” threads about journals and other publications experiencing Google Scholar issues, and we’re attempting to direct them into one place and close off the other threads in order to help keep the forum more tidy in accordance with our guidelines. So, we will close this thread, and encourage you to share your experience on that thread if you have anything unique to contribute.
Feel free to share your experience, in this thread, if you’d like. But, please know that fixing systemic issues related to Google Scholar is out of the control of PKP.
In particular, I’d also like to draw your attention to this particular thread, that explains how OJS (this would also apply to OMP and OPS) operates in relation to Google Scholar:
If you happen to be in contact with Google Scholar, and hear anything from them that can be passed on to other users of PKP software, please do share on the first thread linked to above. Many users of PKP software have been challenged with Google Scholar issues, lately so any information that can be shared with the broader community would be helpful.
Regarding your OAI-PMH issues:
I don’t know if this has much bearing on your site being indexed in Google Scholar, as, so far as I can tell, Google Scholars doesn’t use OAI-PMH for indexing: ttps://forum.pkp.sfu.ca/t/protocol-oai-pmh-in-ojs-3-2-1-1/63952/5
Regardless, you might want to try to address those OAI-PMH isssues.
What you might want to do is create a separate your OAI-PMH issues in a new, separate post here on the forum and check your PHP error logs for errors related to that. That way, others may be be able to better help you if they can see the error log messages. Please see this post if unsure how to do that.
For the OAI-PMH aspect of this issue, please check your server’s error log for messages that appear there when the OAI-PMH request fails. One common cause of OAI-PMH errors as the journal size increases is the PHP memory limit; if you’re running into that, it’ll show up in the log.
