Multilingual References in OJS – different references per language after publication

OJS 3.3.0.21

Hello PKP Support Team,

I am working with a multilingual journal in OJS (primary language + secondary language enabled).

The problem:
We need to display different reference lists for each article language (for example, References in English for the English version, and References in Kazakh for the Kazakh version).

At the moment:

  • References are stored in Publication → References

  • This field is not language-specific

  • After publication, the version cannot be edited

  • As a result, references appear identical for all languages, even when the article metadata is multilingual

What we would like to achieve:

  • Ability to add language-specific references

  • Or a supported workaround to store/display references per language

  • Ideally without manually editing the article galley (PDF/HTML)

Questions:

  1. Is there a native or recommended way in OJS to store references separately per language?

  2. Are there any plugins or planned features for multilingual references?

  3. What is the best practice for multilingual journals indexed in Crossref and other databases?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi @Aznur,

You might be interested in this recent talk that was given (yesterday, in fact):

As I understand it (the presenter talks about this around 54:00 in the video in response to a question), there is some work underway in version 3.6 to better support multilingual references.

There is this (a bit older) discussion here:

I’m not aware, off-hand, of plugins or other workflows that might help with this, but others might wish to weigh in.
