Make a Submission - You are not allowed to submit in this user role

Describe the issue or problem
When attempting to make a submission, the system displays the error message:

“You are not allowed to submit in this user role.”

This occurs even though the user has both the Author and Journal Editor roles assigned.
We have confirmed that both roles have permission to submit and that the Author role is correctly enabled under the user’s profile.

Expected behaviour
A user with the Author role should be able to successfully make a submission without encountering this restriction.

Steps I took leading up to the issue

  1. Go to Dashboard → New Submission

  2. Complete required submission fields (Title, Section, Checklist, Privacy Consent)

  3. Select “Journal Editor” or “Journal Manager” under Submit As

  4. Receive the message:

    “You are not allowed to submit in this user role.”

What application are you using?
OJS 3.5.0-1

Additional information
We have checked and confirmed the following:

  • The user has both Author and Reader roles enabled in their profile

  • The Journal Manager and Journal Editor roles both have submission permissions enabled

  • Self-registration for authors is allowed

  • Clearing data and template caches did not resolve the issue

We’ve been through the documentation and community posts but haven’t found a solution that applies to OJS 3.5.0-1.
Could you please advise what might be preventing users with Author permissions from submitting?

A few more settings to check to rule out any configurations:

Distribution > Access - you don’t have the “OJS will not be used..” option selected do you?
In Users and Roles - what do you have under “Roles” settings? Do these roles have the “Submission” checked off?

Good morning Roger

We have the following settings.

We did have a lengthy discussion yesterday about the various errors we are experiencing and prior to the system update to OJS 3.5.0-1 we were able to submit without any problems. Is there a way to do a rollback to a previous version?

Hi @Postt,

So far as I know there is not a tool to permit downgrading to lower versions. A next step might be to check your PHP error logs for relevant errors and post those messages here?
