Install OJS on WampServer

Hi everybody
I want install OJS version 3.0 ALPHA 1 on wamp server 2.1 with Apache 2.2.17 and PHP 5.3.5 and MYSQL 5.5.8. but in the install page I receive following error:
ERRORS OCCURRED DURING INSTALLATION: A database error has occurred: MySQL server has gone away
Please help me to fix this problem

Hi @mkarimi,

That’s likely a MySQL timeout and you can fix it by changing your MySQL configuration – but can I ask why you’re trying to install OJS 3.0 alpha? That’s an unsupported alpha release and shouldn’t be used in production.

If you want to use OJS in production, I’d suggest installing the latest OJS 2.4.x version; if you want to experiment with pre-release code, I’d suggest going directly to the git master branch.

Mr Smecher, I downloaded the latest OJS 2.4.x version and changed MySQL configuration, but after install on wamp server I received same error again

@mkarimi, can you include the exact error message, and describe the MySQL configuration change you made?

@asmecher, I use wamp server on windows and changed Apache port to 8080 and I changed following configuration on my.ini file in MySQL:
max_allowed_packet = 100M, #innodb_lock_wait_timeout = 500
I aslo allowed 3306 port on firewall because I guessed this problem maybe MySQL port and firewall, but I received same error again

Hi @mkarimi,

See the following link for the appropriate MySQL configuration parameters:

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/gone-away.html

You shouldn’t need to do anything with your firewall. You might also want to check your MySQL error log.

Hi @asmecher, thanks for latest your comment
I checked your link and I think I changed parameter correctly. I send latest error log from MySQL log

I don’t see anything useful there – are you sure you checked the log around the same time as the error occurred?

Hi @mkarimi,

I don’t see anything unusual there, unless maybe MySQL was restarted during the intallation process. I’d suggest clearing out your OJS files, restarting WampServer, and trying a fresh installation over again to see if the same error occurs. If it does, unfortunately, there’s not much more I can do to debug here – OJS is simply reporting that MySQL closed the connection it was using.

Hello again @asmecher, thanks for your help
I cleared OJS directory and restarted Wamp Server and I installed OJS again, but I received the same message again.
I have a question. I had been changed Apache port to 8080 and when installing OJS in the Database Setting, Host field, I put localhost:8080. Is this right? because my localhost on Wamp Server is localhost:8080

Hi @mkarimi,

No – you should probably be using the default MySQL port. Just leave the database host as “localhost”.

@asmecher, I put database host as “localhost” and I received following error:
A database error has occurred: Access denied for user ‘’@‘localhost’ to database ‘ojs’

I have an OJS on WAMP. There is no problems with MySQL, bit there are problems wih solr/lucene search. There is no bat (to check, configure and start|stop java servlet) files in 2.4.7.1 release, i get it on git repository…

Hi @IdeaFix,

The “embedded” Lucene option described in the Lucene README document (plugins/generic/lucene/README) only contains documentation for a Linux platform, although the same toolkit will work on Windows. I’d suggest trying the “Central” server installation, and using the Lucene documentation to get it set up on Windows.

Hi,

I have 2.4.7-1 release on wondows. There is no windows instructions on readme file and no bat files. All this files are avaliable on git. I have only one problem - dead links to jetty-6.1.26.zip

Codehaus has shutdown - http://www.codehaus.org/

README

BAT files

Hi @IdeaFix,

You can get Jetty from e.g. this link:
http://jenv.io/candidate/jetty

I’ll file an issue to update the documentation so that it no longer refers to Codehaus.

Hi @IdeaFix ,

As part of the optimization of external search support for OJS, the PKP Technical Committee is looking for use cases and relevant experience with the Lucene/Solr plugin for OJS.

GitHub - ojsde/lucene: Plugin for Solr/Lucene support in OJS. or via Plugin-Gallery

If you are interested in sharing requirements, user experiences and use cases, please feel free to contact me. We are going to organize a meeting with all the interested parties.

Dulip Withanage

Hi. We use very legacy system… and our main idea - don’t fix what isn’t broken. If there is a list of questions, I will try to answer them. But I do not think that our experience will be relevant.
