Emails have stopped being sent

Hello, within the past week, emails have stopped being sent from OJS. I looked on the plesk panel and found that the Qmail SMTP server daemon had been shut down. I was under the impression that OJS sent mail directly via PHP. Can someone confirm one way or another? thanks!

Thanks. This looked like it was an OJS problem but was really a two fold ISP issue. They did updates to the server and turned off the qmail server. Second was that they have a 1000 outbound email limit per day and we were exceeding that so mail was getting stacked up.
