Dashboard UI/Layout Issues after Upgrading from OJS 3.4.0.8 to 3.5.0.3

Describe the issue or problem
Hello PKP Community,

I have recently upgraded my OJS installation from version 3.4.0.8 to 3.5.0.3. While the upgrade process itself was completed successfully without any fatal errors, I am encountering a significant visual issue in the dashboard.

As you can see in the attached screenshot, the dashboard appears “blank” or improperly rendered. Specifically:

The submission lists (Assigned to me) are missing text labels and action buttons.
Icons and UI elements are not loading correctly, making it difficult to navigate or perform editorial tasks.
The overall layout seems broken or “blurred” in terms of missing functional components.

Steps I’ve already taken:

Cleared the OJS template and data cache.
Cleared my browser cache and tried an Incognito window.
Verified that file permissions are correct for the cache/ and public/ directories.

I suspect this might be related to a CSS/Javascript loading issue or perhaps a specific change in the 3.5.x UI components. Has anyone else experienced this after moving to the 3.5.x branch?

Any guidance on what might be causing this or how to fix it would be greatly appreciated.

It may also be worth checking your PHP error logs for messages found there? That may also help to provide some clues.

Hi @inaya, did you get the code from a release package or directly from GitHub? Sometimes I have seen display errors like this when I pull code from GitHub but forget to run all of the setup steps (e.g. with composer and npm).

It looks like you may also need to update some of your plugins in the plugin gallery to their 3.5 versions.

Thank you for the follow-up. To answer your question, I downloaded the OJS 3.5.0-3 version from the official release package and performed the installation from there.

Regarding the plugins, I’m a bit unsure which specific ones need to be updated to their 3.5 versions. Could you please guide me on which plugins in the gallery currently require an update?

Based on the logs you shared above, it looks like you need to update the plugins:

OpenId
Classic theme
Keyword Cloud

… but there may be others. After a major version upgrade, most of the plugins installed from the plugin gallery will need to be updated.

Could you try reviewing and updating your plugins in Settings > Website > Plugins > Plugin Gallery, then see if the error is still there, and share the logs again if so? If you still see errors like Instantiation of the plugin ... has failed, then this means there are likely still outdated plugins installed.

I have updated all the plugins via the Plugin Gallery as suggested, including OpenID, Classic Theme, and Keyword Cloud. However, the error still persists. Despite the updates, the system is not functioning correctly. What should be my next step to resolve this?

Could you share an updated error log when you open a page with the issue? And could you also check your browser’s console log for any errors as well, and share them?
