Add Abstract title to all HTML galleys

Describe the problem you would like to solve

Our editors need a way to retrospectively insert the “Abstract” heading above the abstracts in our articles’ full-text HTML galleys as the absence of that title is affecting our acceptance on Scopus and other indexing services.

Describe the solution you’d like

For future articles it’s relatively straightforward: add an Abstract heading to the full text and/or make changes to the abstract structure. The challenge is that for the journal to be accepted of indexing, we would need to apply this change to our back issues. That means retrospective changes to a large number of html and PDF pages. (>3000 articles)

One possible solution would be for the HTML full-text galleys to be generated from an underlying template, and if changes are made to the template then the galley files can be regenerated thereby “fixing” all previous full-text galleys.

I’m unsure if this solution would be workable but am open to ideas and suggestions on how to streamline this process.

Additional information

We recently applied to have our journal indexed in Scopus, one of the major journal article databases, but it was rejected because we didn’t meet the requirement for all articles to have an abstract. In fact, all our articles do have abstracts, but on our full text versions, the word ‘Abstract’ does not appear above the abstract, and because of the way our abstracts are structured and written, it’s not obvious that they are an abstract.

Example:
Main page, including ‘Abstract’ heading: https://veterinaryevidence.org/index.php/ve/article/view/676
Full text html: https://veterinaryevidence.org/index.php/ve/article/download/676/973?inline=1
Full text PDF: https://veterinaryevidence.org/index.php/ve/article/download/676/974?inline=1

Our Journal: OJS 3.3.0.13

Hi @Ant_Forshaw,

Thanks for your post and sharing your experience as it relates to indexing. This is probably more suited to a feature request, so I’ve adjusted the category. I would, however, request that you reformat your post to conform to our feature request guidelines. We hope this will make it easier to understand the requests and, at the same time, ensure that no relevant information is missing.

To that end, could you please re-edit your first post following this template?

One thing I will note as well, as that HTML galleys are typically developed outside of OJS, so I’m not 100% sure how this would be “baked-in” to ensure that all HTML galleys have it present in the HTML. But given that it’s required as you note, in the case of some indexes, it’s worthwhile discussing.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Hi Roger,

Thanks for getting back to me and your advice on rewording the post. Please let me know if it meets the requirements for a feature request.

Kind regards,

Anthony

Looks good, @Ant_Forshaw! Thanks for this. Hopefully one of our developers will have an opportunity to weigh in at some point soon.
